How do we achieve Sustainability at Cafeína Design?
For us, each project is unique, so we consider it important and necessary to generate sustainable architecture that provides comprehensive solutions to complex problems, mitigating the negative impacts of climate change.
Besides implementing the BIM Methodology which optimizes time and costs, for each project, we implement different steps that seek sustainable solutions within the possibilities of the project itself and the established budget.
-
1. Needs definition
Through a set of questions and meetings with the client, we learn about their perspective on sustainability and their interest in it.
-
2. Analysis and research
In each project do a bioclimatic analysis and research to understand the characteristics of the environment in which we are going to intervene.
-
3. Sustainable strategies
We list the priority lines of action and the applicable strategies for each particular project.
-
4. Creative proposal
We define the applicable strategies in the volumetry and analyze their behavior in the building, in order to discard or adjust alternatives.
-
5. Materiality
Each strategy is developed from the creative phase to the executive phase where it is finalized in materials, technical plans and details.

Cafeína Design's Sustainability Model
We developed the “CDSM” (Cafeina Design Sustainability Model) a comprehensive approach that serves as guidance in each project. The model integrates the minimum necessary actions to take into account to develop sustainable projects, implementing each action from an environmental, social, and economic perspective.
This Model was created considering the rating categories used by the different certification systems that have been worldwide references for sustainable buildings such as LEED, BREEAM, Green, DGNB, among others, and the 3 essential pillars of sustainable development. exposed in the “Brundtland Report”.
Our Sustainability Model is classified as follows:
- Action lines
- Strategies
- Sustainability spheres
When starting a project, the sustainable action lines are defined with the highest priority, depending on the nature, budget and objectives of each project and client, always taking into consideration the site where it is located and even its life cycle.
For example, the action lines do not have the same order of priority in a project in the commercial or educational sector, where connection with the environment and social integration may be more relevant, than in a housing project. For us, all action lines are important.
Passive Design Strategies
These are techniques that take advantage of natural elements in the environment, such as sunlight, wind and temperature, to improve thermal comfort and reduce energy consumption in buildings. These strategies include building orientation, thermal insulation, natural ventilation, the use of high thermal mass materials and the incorporation of shading and solar protection. The aim is to minimise the dependence on mechanical heating, cooling and lighting systems, thus achieving a more sustainable and efficient building.
